The opposite of a cameo,?an intaglio?is created by carving into the surface of a stone. Its purpose would have often been to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A beautiful intaglio ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Made of silver-topped 14kt gold, the ring holds a carnelian intaglio at?the center, which is surrounded by a sparkling diamond border. The carved image is very artistic, representing what appears to be?a Grecian goddess or muse. The female figure stands beside a Grecian urn, holding a gauzy shawl of fabric behind her shoulders. The carnelian displays a rich natural color and is prong set in silver. The surrounding belcher set border of sparkling old Mine Cut diamonds is simply spectacular, totaling approximately 1.10ctw. Completing the design are pillar style shoulders?that extend to an engraved band, and a scrolled wire work motif that?forms the gallery below the stone. An outstanding example of Victorian intaglio jewelry,?this incredible statement piece would make a special addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 6.25, but it could be resized if necessary. The?carnelian and diamond centerpiece measures 7/8" tall, 5/8" wide, and rests approximately 3/8" above the finger when worn.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver-topped gold setting or to the carnelian intaglio, which is intact and free of chips or surface scratches. The diamonds are all intact and securely set. There is a natural patina on the surface of the setting, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds to its unique beauty and appearance.
